5 Phils Prospects in Top 100

MLB Pipeline, which is the offical prospect site of the Majors, came out with their mid season rerank of the top 100 prospects in the minors. The Phillies were well represented by their top 5 prospects.

Top 100 Rank

#3 J.P. Crawford- Position: SS Age: 21 Pre Season Rank: #5

#34 Mickey Moniak- Position: OF Age: 18 Pre Season Rank: N/A

#62 Nick Williams- Position: OF Age: 22 Pre Season Rank: #64

#72 Jorge Alfaro- Position: C Age: 23 Pre Season Rank: #96

#73 Jake Thompson- Position: RHP Age: 22 Pre Season Rank: #55

Thoughts

Three prospects, pitcher Mark Appel and outfielders Roman Quinn and Cornelius Randolph were on the pre season top 100, but all three suffered injuries, which resulted in their seasons being put on hold, and in Appel’s case, done for the season.

The first overall pick in this year’s draft, Mickey Moniak, slides in at #34 and is the highest rated of all prospects drafted in 2016.

Crawford did not move in the rerank, at the time of the rerank, Crawford was the #3 prospect in the top 100, becuase two prospects ahead of him graduated.  Thompson and Williams both fell, while Alfaro rose in the rankings despite missing three weeks with an injury. In Reading he’s hitting .295 with 12 homers and 15 doubles in 71 games.

Thoughts

Crawford stays #1 in the organization, that’s no surprise. Moniak becomes the #2 prospect, that doesn’t surprise me either. Williams and Alfaro both jump Thompson, that does surprise me considering Thompson has had a very good year. Dylan Cozens takes the biggest jump, going from #21 to #7, he’s hitting .279 with 26 homers and 31 doubles for Reading. Cozens does have a strikeout problem, striking out 124 times in 376 at bats. Fellow Reading slugger, Rhys Hoskins moved up 6 spots, hitting .286 with 29 homers, which leads all minor leaguers, and 23 doubles. Phillies second round pick this year, Kevin Gowdy, comes in at #10, third rounder Cole Stobbe is #15, and fourth rounder Jojo Romero comes in at #25. You have to impressed with Klentak’s draft this year with his top four picks all top 25 prospects in the organization.

The injured Mark Appel fell 7 spots from #4 to #11, I think this may be a little generous considering his age and injury problems. Four prospects who were on the top 30 before the rerank, Darnell Sweeney, Alec Asher, Aaron Brown, and Deivi Gorullon all fell out the top 30.

A few prospects made other lists as well.

Crawford was ranked the #1 short stop in the minors.

Alfaro is the third ranked catcher, while Knapp is ninth.

Moniak is the ninth ranked outfielder.

Kingery is the #6 second baseman.

The organizations will be ranked next week, but the Phillies should be a top 10 system with the  depth and talent it has acquired through trades and the draft the past few seasons. The Phillies possess  possibly the deepest organization when it comes to the outfield, which is important considering the poor play by the current outfield for the Phillies.

The future looks bright in Philadelphia and the trade dealine should add even more talent to an already loaded system.
