Local Organizations Benefit from Separate Pittsburgh Pirates Fundraisers

From a players’ personal effort to an organizational push to help the fight, local cancer charities get a boost from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

If you like donating money to a worthy cause and collecting Pittsburgh Pirates items like t-shirts, bobbleheads and commemorative plates, you’re in luck. In two separate ways, the Pittsburgh Pirates are making it very easy for fans to acquire one-of-a-kind items while also donating money to several local cancer-related organizations.

Pirates Charities Night on AT&T SportsNet

Tomorrow night is Pirates Charities Night on AT&T SportsNet, an annual game in which backpacks stuffed with Pittsburgh Pirates swag are auctioned off to raise funds for deserving charities in and around Pittsburgh. The network dedicates the entire night to promoting the auction. This includes announcing backpack winners on the air, interviewing those impacted by the charities helped and talking to a few of the players’ wives/girlfriends who volunteer to work the phones.

There are two backpacks offered, the Home Run Backpack for a $250 donation and the Grand Slam Backpack for a $700 donation.

The Home Run Backpack includes: Roberto Clemente 21 jersey, deluxe headphones, afghan throw, luggage tag, limited edition 50th anniversary Charlie Brown Pirates bobblehead, Oliver or Hannah pierogy plush, leather cap, commemorative Pirates Ballparks plate set, Tervis tumbler, set of Clemente coasters, Pirates yearbook, voucher for two tickets to a 2017-2018 game, baseballs autographed by a Pirates player and a Pirates alum. The Grand Slam Backpack includes everything in the Home Run pack as well as a Pirates home white jersey signed by the player of the buyers’ choice.

There are all sorts of additional exclusive items that may be in backpacks, as well as random items like gas cards, restaurant gift cards, season ticket packages and a first pitch opportunity. Visit the Pirates Charities page for full details on available goodies.

In the past, if you’re tied up or miss the game, you miss out on a great opportunity. Not this year! AT&T SportsNet opened online ordering up today at 10 a.m. Tomorrow night, August 2, you can buy your backpack at the game on PNC Park’s Riverwalk or by calling 412.325.4888 beginning at 5 p.m.

K Cancer

After the shock of Jameson Taillon’s testicular cancer diagnosis wore off, many people started asking what they could do to help. Jamo was quiet at the time – obviously focused on other things. But yesterday, he let fans in on one of the ways he’s working to raise awareness and money for the disease that temporarily benched him.

108 Stitches started the line of K Cancer tees with Atlanta Braves pitcher Jason Motte and the MLB Players’ Association to help players direct funds to an organization special to them as well as some to Motte’s Foundation, Strike Out Cancer.

The cost of the shirt is $32 plus applicable taxes and shipping.

The Beneficiaries

Taillon is donating the funds raised through the sale of this shirt ($10) to support The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, which is a leader the leader in innovative and integrated health care, education, and social services for children and youth with special health care needs and ($2) to support the Jason Motte Foundation, which provides comfort and care for those in need whether affected directly or indirectly by cancer.

The funds raised through Pirates Charity Night on AT&T SportsNet will be split between Pirates Charities and four local organizations dedicated to providing support and services to those living with cancer. They are: Cancer Caring Center, which provides free support services to local cancer patients and their loved ones; Glimmer of Hope “Home for Hope,” which raises funds for breast cancer research in pre-menopausal women; Lending Hearts, which provides emotional and social support to children and young adults with cancer and their families; and Our Clubhouse, which provides a warm and welcoming environment for anyone impacted by cancer.
