About Anthony Joshua
Joshua was born in Watford in 1989. A relatively late starter in the sport, he began boxing at the age of 18 when his cousin encouraged him to join the club Finchley ABC in Barnet. For the first few years, the young boxer was more interested in collecting medals than making money. His determination saw him make it as Amateur Boxer of the Year in 2011. He then went on to represent Team GB and win super-heavyweight gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
In 2013, the same year he received an MBE in recognition of his services to the sport, Joshua finally decided the time was right to make the transition into the world of professional boxing. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Joshua has had just as much success as a professional as he did an amateur. But if he is to defend his WBA Super, IBF, WBO and IBO belts, the 28-year-old champion must conquer Russia’s Povetkin in the ring later this month.
Povetkin promises to be one of the toughest challengers of Joshua’s career. A fellow Olympic champion, he has only suffered a single defeat since his debut in 2005. It’s sure to be one of the most dramatic showdowns in heavyweight history.
