WWE is just days away from the 2019 Royal Rumble PPV, and we have the latest updates surrounding the big event taking place in Phoenix.
The first photos of the setup for this year’s Royal Rumble PPV are beginning to roll in, as for the first time ever, the event will be taking place from Chase Field.
According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Chase Field is setup to hold approximately 43,000 fans, which is likely why WWE has been using the infamous bait-and-switch tactic when promoting the Rumble PPV and attempting to boost ticket sales.
WWE advertised both John Cena for the Royal Rumble match and Brock Lesnar vs Braun Strowman, but reports indicate Cena was never scheduled to be at the PPV to begin with, and WWE officials decided against Lesnar vs Strowman weeks ago despite The Monster Among Men being medically cleared to compete.
The Observer report adds WWE is expecting anywhere from 25,000-30,000 paid fans in attendance for the Royal Rumble PPV, and that number could be inflated when non-paid attendees are factored in.
With regards to possible surprises at the Rumble, WrestleVotes recently Tweeted, “On the way to PHX for the Rumble! A few names I keep hearing about showing up on Sunday as surprises: Kurt Angle, Bray Wyatt & Velveteen Dream. Nothing set, but those names have been coming up in conversations for the past few weeks. We shall see.”
PWInsider added that Big Show has been spotted in Phoenix doing PPV promotional work for WWE, and while he has not been confirmed for the Rumble match, it’s very possible he could be a surprise entrant.
As we noted earlier this week, Matt Hardy, Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan and Tye Dillinger have all been cleared by WWE to return to the ring, and are also very possible surprise entrants in the Rumble match. With 20 names officially confirmed for the bout, 19 names if you do not count John Cena, whose status is still being listed as “questionable” by WWE, there are 10-11 spots left which could be filled by surprise names.
