Penn State adds three-star cornerback D.J. Brown to recruiting class out of Georgia

Penn State has been racking up verbal commitments in the last week. On Monday, Georgia cornerback D.J. Brown became the fourth commit since the Blue-White Game. He is the first cornerback to join the class as well. He did so by announcing his decision on Twitter with a very amateur-looking Photoshop alongside a statement.

Brown reportedly accepted an offer from Penn State over offers from Cal, Indiana, Louisville, Mississippi State, Kansas State, UCLA and Wisconsin among others. Penn State is getting a smart kid too, because one school that extended an offer was Harvard (and Northwestern). You always like to see stuff like that, right? It is also worth pointing out Penn State acted quickly in their recruiting of Brown. Brown made his first unofficial visit to Penn State on April 15, at which time he was extended his scholarship offer. This happened two days after Mississippi State extended an offer. Ten days later, and Brown decided to join the Nittany Lions.

According to the 247 Sports composite ranking, Brown is a three-star recruit. The 5′-11″, 175-pound player has played multiple positions in the defensive backfield, although Black Shoe Diaries notes he has been recruited to play cornerback and not a safety position in Penn State’s defense. All signs also point to Brown getting a chance to be molded to play the position for Penn State in the long run, rather than being thrown to the wolves early on. Penn State has some decent depth at the position, so it could be a few years before Brown sees any significant playing time, and he may even get a chance to redshirt his first year on campus.

Penn State is also not exactly done recruiting defensive backs. Clairton’s Lamont Wade remains a top target and other targets on the board include Ambry Thomas from Michigan.

Penn State’s Class of 2017 is now up to eight players. The class also expands on the reach by entering a fifth different state, and it’s a significant one. Georgia is a state overflowing with talent, so any time Penn State can pluck a recruit from the state it is a step in the right direction to building relationships in the south. Penn State added two players from Georgia in the Class of 2016 (punter Blake Gillikin and kicker Alex Barbir).
