Ed Note: This is a guest post from friend of The CD John Madigan on Thursday night’s Cardinals/Reds game. It has been lightly edited for clarity. Apologies in advance for two straight positive posts on this site.
Hey CD fans, allow me to not only celebrate last night’s victory, but reminisce a bit as well.
Good ol’ CD patriarch athooks has been a longtime friend of mine. In 2006, when our beloved Redbirds backed into the playoffs (thanks Atlanta!), there was a pep rally/celebration outside of Busch Stadium the next day. So we and some other friends decided to go.
An emcee of the event declared that the Cards were going to win the World Series. We are all diehard Cards fans, but collectively among our group, there was a sense of doubt. Maybe even a chuckle or two. But it was a fun time, and we enjoyed it.
Then, things started turning around. To quote a CD friend, whose name I can’t remember…
‘Maybe we’ll just fuck around and win this thing.’
And the Cards did.
I skipped my friends wedding to take in a playoff game. I made up a sign and gave it to my girlfriend (much better looking than me) that said: ‘Sorry we missed your wedding! Cards are in the playoffs! See you at the reception!’ We got on TV.
I felt guilty about my initial doubts. Then when the Redbirds won it all, the local bars ran out of beer, even in a town where the world’s largest brewery is just down the street.
My point? Don’t give up.
We just might fuck around and win this thing.
