The Red Sox faced off against the Blue Jays in the final week of the season. The Yankees had a day game and already won by the time the Sox and Jays had their first pitch. Drew Pomeranz was on the mound for the Sox and didn’t have his best outing. Pomeranz only lasted a couple of innings and his velocity seemed significantly lower than usual. The Sox offense kept the game close, but they weren’t able to have one of the famous Sox late inning rallies.
Pomeranz gave up a solo home run to Donaldson in the top of the 1st to put the Sox down 0-1. The Sox not only tied it up, but took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez both hit RBI groundouts to have the Sox leading 2-1. Mookie Betts RBI put him at 100 RBI for the season. Unfortunately, Pomeranz gave the lead right back to the Jays in the top of the 2nd. Pomeranz gave up a 2 run RBI double to Hernandez and then another 2 run RBI double to Donaldson. Sox 5-2. Pomeranz went back out for the top of the 3rd, but when he gave up a lead off single, Farrell went to get him. Austin Maddox came into the game and pitched a scoreless 3rd. Maddox went back out for the 4th and got two outs before walking a batter to end his outing. Blaine Boyer came out and got the 3rd out of the inning to keep the score 2-5. Boyer pitched a scoreless 5th inning and then the Sox got within 2 runs when Mookie Betts got another RBI in the bottom of the 5th. Mookie hit an RBI single to score Bogaerts from 3rd. Sox 3-5. Boyer went back out to pitch a scoreless 6th inning before handing the ball over to Carson Smith in the 7th. Smith pitched two scoreless innings of work. While this game wasn’t what the Sox wanted, once again their bullpen continued to shine. In the bottom of the 8th the Sox got within a single run when Andrew Benintendi came in to pinch hit and hit a solo home run to center. Sox 4-5. The Jays got that run right back in the top of the 9th when Addison Reed gave up a solo home run of his own to Goins. Sox 4-6. The Sox weren’t able to rally again in the 9th and the Jays won the first game of the series.
