Blues Sign Kyle Wellwood*
The Blues have officially signed Kyle Wellwood to a one-year contract, as announced by the club this morning. Wellwood practiced with the Blues today, but has to pass through waivers before he officially joins the Blues – hence the asterisk. As we saw last time with Marek Svatos, the waiver process can be a fickle one, and considering the relative small size of Wellwood’s contract, you shouldn’t be surprised if he too is snatched up by another team.
Wellwood had been skating with the KHL’s Mytishchi Atlant, appearing in 25 contests while contributing five goals and three assists prior to the Blues signing him.
Despite skating in the KHL this season, Wellwood has plenty of NHL experience under his belt. He skated with the Vancouver Canucks in each of the previous two seasons and spent just over three full seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Unfortunately in recent years Wellwood’s character off the ice has been called into question more often than his actions on the ice, as a variety of outlets questioned his well…eating habits.
Wellwood’s reputation has been that of a lazy individual that often refuses to take care of his body, as evidenced when he showed up out of shape to Vancouver’s camp when they first claimed him from Toronto.
Hopefully he is inspired by being forced to find time in the KHL and hopefully he has new resolve and will thrive in a change of scenery. Hopefully.
If Wellwood makes it through waivers unclaimed, he likely will take over Chris Porter’s spot in the lineup. There are plenty of fat jokes to be made there, but this blog will take the higher road … for now.
Wellwood’s Career Totals:
338 games, 63 goals, 97 assists (160 points) and a (-2).
