The Red Sox came into the game last night 11 games under .500 and hoped that Brandon Workman would have a rebound outing from his last outing against the Cubs. Workman didn’t pitch horribly, but he didn’t pitch well enough to get himself his first win this season at Fenway. The offense tied it up in the 5th, but Workman gave the lead right back to the White Sox in the top of the 6th. The game was another frustrating loss for the Red Sox against a team they hoped to be able to use to make up some ground in the AL East.
Workman allowed the White Sox to get on the board in the 2nd inning. Workman loaded the bases with no outs and then a run scored when Napoli bobbled a ball at first, Dunn scored and everyone was safe. The second run was scored when De Aza ground into a double play, but the run scored from 3rd. Red 0-2. The White Sox scored their 3rd run of the game when Workman gave up an RBI single to De Aza. Red 0-3.
White Sox pitcher Danks had been a little wild all night and the Red Sox bats finally got to him in the 5th inning to tie the game. Brock Holt started the inning with a triple and then Pedroia got him home with an RBI double to left. Papi hit a long long out and then Napoli hit an RBI double to score Pedey. The game was tied when Bogaerts hit an RBI single to bring Napoli to the plate. Fenway suddenly had some life in it, but unfortunately that would not last for very long. Workman gave the White Sox that lead right back when he gave up a 2 run HR to Gillaspie in the top of the 6th inning. Workman has been plagued by the HR in his last few outings.
Workman pitched 7 innings and his pitching line 106 pitches, 7 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB and 5 Ks. Sure, he ended up with the loss, but it wasn’t a horrible pitching line. Workman was sent down after the game to make room for spot starter De La Rosa, but I imagine he will be back sooner rather than later. Miller came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning with 2 strikeouts. Miller continues to be one of the strongest pieces of the bullpen. Burke Badenhop took the mound in the 9th and continued the bad trend of giving up hits and runs. Badenhop gave up an RBI triple to De Aza to score Sierra. Red 3-5. Badenhop was out of the game and Breslow was in. Breslow didn’t stop the bleeding and allowed two more runs. He gave up an RBI double to Beckman and then an RBI ground rule double to Konerko. Red 3-8. The Red Sox bats would not have a rally in them in the bottom of the inning and that would be the final score.
Red Sox 3 White Sox 8 BOXSCORE
WP: Danks (8-6) LP: Workman (1-3)
