Last week, the LA Rams made the biggest splash of the offseason, trading away a plethora of draft picks to move up to the No. 1 spot in the NFL Draft.
The pick is all but certain to be one of two quarterbacks- North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz or California’s Jared Goff.
Either move suddenly leaves the Rams with an overabundance at the QB spot, leaving one signal caller on the outs. Currently the Rams have:
Case Keenum
Nick Foles
Sean Mannion
Back in January, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher had all but named Keenum the starting QB heading into the 2016 season, having earned the job after guiding St. Louis to three wins in their final four games.
Sean Mannion, a third round pick out of Oregon State, looks to be safe at least for another season, especially when you consider that the Rams used a 2nd day pick on him.
And then there is Nick Foles, who had a historic 2013 campaign in which he tossed 27 touchdown passes to just a pair of interceptions. In 2014, Foles regressed and was traded to St. Louis for Sam Bradford prior to the start of the 2015 season. After beginning the year as the starting QB, Foles lost his job to poor play and only regained the top spot because of injuries to Keenum.
In 11 games played, Foles fired just 7 touchdown passes to 10 interceptions. 2016 will be the final year on his two year contract extension he signed upon arriving in St. Louis.
So in the end, it all but appears, that Nick Foles could be the odd man out for Los Angeles Rams. Once they draft either Wentz or Goff, they’ll have to narrow down the QB depth chart to three, and with Keenum all but assured at least right now, to start in Week 1, leaving Wentz or Goff to battle with Mannion for the No. 2 spot, it leaves no room for Foles.
