Titans roster cutdown open thread-Saturday

TMS1-10

As Saturday began, the Titans roster stood at 60 players after they released 15 players Friday. That means at least 7 more cuts will be coming, one of which has already been released. Of the names still on the roster, the ones that stand out to me as possible cut candidates were one of kickers Maikon Bonani and Travis Coons,  offensive tackle Will Poehls, wideout Rico Richardson, center Steve Vallos, and cornerback Winston Wright. This morning, Paul Kuharsky has indicated Wright will likely be released, while defensive back Khalid Wooten, a clear bubble player I had on the team in my last roster prediction, should be on the initial 53.

As a reminder, here is yesterday’s list of cuts: OT Jeff Adams, CB Ri’Shard Anderson, DL Chigbo Anunoby, CB Tommie Campbell, TE Chase Coffman, OLB Brandon Copeland, QB Dominique Davis, DE Marcus Dixon, WR Marc Mariani, G Justin McCray, FB Collin Mooney, G/C Eric Olsen, WR Brian Robiskie, TE Jason Schepler (per Glennon)

Here’s a list of today’s reported cuts:

K Maikon Bonani (per Jim Wyatt)
DE Lavar Edwards (traded to Cowboys for conditional 7th-round pick, per Cowboys beat guy Todd Archer)
DL Antonio Johnson (placed on injured reserve, per John Glennon)
LB Moise Fokou (per Wyatt)
OT Will Poehls (per Wyatt)
WR Rico Richardson (per Wyatt)
CB Winston Wright (per Terry McCormick)

After Bonani was the only kicker to see action in Thursday’s preseason finale, I thought that was a sign he’d won the job, at least until the Titans signed another kicker who’d been let go by another team. I don’t think I was alone in believing that. Apparently not, as his release gives Travis Coons the job, at least for now. I still think it’s more likely than not the Week 1 kicker is not yet on the roster.

I had Fokou on my initial roster prediction, but I didn’t think that one through nearly enough. Zaviar Gooden and Avery Williamson are your reserve inside linebackers, while we are still waiting to see if all of Akeem Ayers, Patrick Bailey, and Shaun Phillips make the team on the outside.

Nice to see the Titans get a pick for Edwards, who was without a role in the new defense and had no shot to make the team. I still like the player, and Dallas needs bodies on defense.

LATEST UDPATE (2014/08/30, 1515 CT): And with the additions of Johnson, Poehls, Richardson, and Wright, the Titans are now down to 53. Steve Vallos and Khalid Wooten stand out as the bubble players who made it, as do fourth and fifth wide receivers Derek Hagan and Michael Preston. It’s quite possible the Titans will add a player or two off the waiver wire. After those claims are processed tomorrow, I’ll have a breakdown of the 53-man roster.
