Latest NFL News and Rumors

How Do NFL Odds Work?

NFL odds are fairly straightforward. Simply put, they refer to the likelihood of any given outcome within the context of an NFL game, NFL quarter, NFL half, and/or future outcomes, otherwise known as NFL future odds.

Explaining NFL Odds

In short, NFL odds are a result of roster construction, injuries, and in-season play. Other factors may be considered such as analytics, scheduling, and public betting. However, most oddsmakers are putting the most weight into each team and their current rosters. Depending on the time of year and how a team is doing their odds may change for the better or for worse.

Furthermore, NFL odds can refer to a number of different outcomes. The most popular are NFL futures odds, which include odds for the Super Bowl, NFC and AFC Championships, division titles, over/under for wins, and much more.

Additionally, NFL odds may also refer to in-game odds and weekly NFL betting lines that relate to specific games in any given NFL week. For example, the most popular weekly odd you will likely see at your favorite sportsbook is the against the spread bet.

BetOnline NFL game odds

When a spread bet is listed as -7, it means the team is favored to win by 7 points or more. When a spread bet is listed as +7, it means a team is expected to lose by 7 or less. Also, you may see moneyline odds, which are odds that a team will win straight-up (no point spread needed).

How to Read NFL Odds

As indicated above, you must pay attention to the minus “-” and “+” signs when reading NFL odds. Any odd with a minus sign is an indication of the most likely outcome as per the oddsmakers – otherwise known as the favorite bet. A plus sign indicates an underdog bet.

For example, if you wanted to bet on a game between the Dallas Cowboys versus the Green Bay Packers and saw that the Cowboys were -110 and the Packers were +120 this means the Cowboys are favored to win the game per the oddsmakers. If you were to place a $110 bet on the Cowboys at -110 you would win $100 plus your bet back.

Conversely, a $100 bet on the Packers at +120 would net you $120 plus your $100 back. This is because the oddsmakers have the Packers as underdogs straight-up.

Odds such as -110 and +120 will be associated with any NFL betting line, which includes moneyline bets, NFL spread bets, NFL point total bets, NFL parlay odds, and NFL futures.

Type of NFL Odds Available

When it comes to NFL betting, there are several varieties of NFL odds to choose from depending on the time of year and/or the specific game or bet type. We’ve already mentioned a few of the main NFL betting lines you’ll see at every major sportsbook but below we take a deeper look at each.

Game Odds

NFL game odds encompass several different odds types. Below is a quick summary of the major NFL game odds.

Moneyline

Betting a team straight up to win outright, with no points requirements, is better known as a moneyline bet or moneyline odds. Simply put, they allow you to simply pick who you think will win the game without having to worry about meeting a points threshold.

Example:

Team Odds
Dallas Cowboys  -110
Green Bay Packers   +120

Spread

Against the spread odds are a bit more complex than moneyline odds. A team will either be favored by a certain amount of points or will be the underdog but can still win the spread bet if they lose by a certain amount or win outright. When betting the underdog in spread bets, your team can lose by any number of points under the listed amount and you can sill win your bet.

For example, a +7 spread bet means that your team can lose by 6 points or fewer, or win, and you will your bet.

Team Spread Odds
Dallas Cowboys  -7 -110
Green Bay Packers  +7 -110

Over/Under Totals

Over/under odds most commonly refer to the total number of points scored by both teams combined in a game. However, there are variations of this NFL bet type – such as over/under for a quarter, half, or over/under for an individual team. When placing this bet you are betting teams to surpass the listed score total or score fewer points than the listed total.

Game Over/Under Odds
Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers  O 55 -110
Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers U 55 -110

Prop Bets

Prop bets are alternative betting lines that are typically unique to each game. For example, you may see a prop bet for a specific quarterback to throw for at least 3 touchdowns in a game or a running back to rush over a certain amount of yards in the game.

Futures Odds

NFL futures odds are markets that are posted well ahead of an event, such as the Super Bowl or playoffs. Futures will change over the course of the season, therefore, pre-season is where you will find the best value for futures as oddsmakers have less data to work off of and can only speculate based on offseason moves and current rosters.

Outright Super Bowl Winner

The most popular NFL future bet is betting on who you think will run the Super Bowl. In order for this bet to win, your team of choice must win the Super Bowl. Thus, the odds are quite favorable in terms of how much money you can make. However, as the season progresses, sportsbooks will adjust the odds.

Example:

Team Odds
Buffalo Bills   +650
New England Patriots   +2000
Philadelphia Eagles  +2500

Conference/Division Winner

Sportsbooks will also post odds on who they think will win the NFC and AFC Championship game, as well as who they think will win each division. Like the Super Bowl odds, these odds will adjust over time.

Rookie of the Year

There are individual future bets available for the NFL, including odds for who will win awards such as Rookie of the Year or NFL Coach of the Year. Like all futures, these adjust as the season plays out. One thing to not is that not every offensive or defensive player will have odds to win an award as sportsbooks focus on select top-tier players.

MVP

One other major award that sports fans and sports bettors like to bet on is who will win NFL MVP (Most Valuable Player). NFL MVP odds are available before and during the season and you can bet on either offensive or defensive players.

NFL MVP Futures XBet

Parlay Odds

A parlay bet is when you bet on multiple outcomes within one game, across several games, and/or across several sports. In summary, you build a bet slip or bet ticket that has several bets and bet on the fact that all of your bets must win in order for you to win your parlay bet.

Because multiple outcomes are required, odds increase, which means larger payouts – depending on the bets themselves. For example, if you parlay favorites that are all -500, then your parlay payout won’t be too large. However, if you mix in underdog bets such as +200 and/or less favorable odds, you will likely have a chance to win more money.

Live NFL Odds

Nowadays, all major online sportsbooks and NFL betting apps allow you to place bets during a live sporting event. Live NFL betting is a great way to double down on bets you made earlier in the day and/or take advantage of an opportunity that you think will present itself during a game.

The most common live, or in-game, bets are moneyline, against the spread, and over/under total points scored.
