UND vs. UMN Week… The Rivalry returns

[polldaddy poll=9567142]Whatever you want to call it, the historic rivalry is back. Yeah, that one. The University of North Dakota is going to take on the University of Minnesota in an epic two-game non-conference series at Mariucci Arena, Minneapolis, MN.

The two teams haven’t played a two-game series since both teams were a member of the now remodeled WCHA. The Gophers went to the Big Ten Hockey Conference and the Fighting Sioux are now a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Since the move, UND is now officially known as the Fighting Hawks. Please don’t shoot the messenger.

I bet Kevin Wehrs is happy he won’t be getting run by Matt Frattin this weekend. The two teams haven’t played since the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four. That being said, I lot has happened since that notorious game. Minnesota has been a dumpster fire and UND  made two more trips to the Frozen Four. UND’s last trip to the Frozen Four was more memorable. This time, UND won their eighth NCAA title while the Gophers missed the NCAA tourney.

Rest assured, UND fans will hear a lot of comments about the .06, but it’s best to take the high road and remind them that 8 > 5. There’s been a two-year hiatus in the rivalry. Very few players from either team have played in this game and if my math is correct, senior goalie Matt Hrynkiw and senior captain, defenseman Gage Ausmus are the only two players that were on the team when UND played against the Gophers in the Frozen Four. If my memory is correct, neither UND player was dressed for that game.
