London-bound Kirk Cousins wears sunglasses at night to adjust sleep

Washington Redskins v Detroit Lions

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is trying to adjust his sleep schedule for Sunday’s game in London with the four-hour time difference in mind.

Normally it’s a five-hour difference, but Daylight Savings Time will be in effect in England.

“I’m going to be right now starting to adjust,” Cousins told the team website. “Start getting to bed earlier each night, getting up earlier, wearing sunglasses at night, little things just to try to make that adjustment as quickly as possible so I don’t feel it this weekend when we get there.”

Wait.

Sunglasses at night?

It’s hard to tell if Cousins was trying to invoke Corey Hart, the Canadian singer who broke through in 1984 with his hit single “Sunglasses at Night.” Seeing the way the words of the song title were kind of couched in with all his other points, it would seem that Cousins wasn’t really trying to drop a Hart reference. Cousins wasn’t born until 1988, so he might not be old enough to remember Hart in his heyday. Cousins was born the year Hart released his “Young Man Running” album. And, well, Cousins did run for five touchdowns last year and he ran for another one Sunday in a losing effort at Detroit.

The Redskins started 0-2 this season as Cousins threw one touchdown pass and three interceptions. But Cousins and the Redskins, ummm, never surrendered and won four in a row before falling 20-17 at Detroit.

Who knows if Cousins’ sleep-adjustment methods will give him a boost against the Bengals Sunday.

But Hart’s music might get a few more clicks, and he’ll have Cousins to thank.
