At the conclusion of the annual football awards banquet, Head Coach Brian Kelly in somewhat surprising fashion named off the 2017 team captains. The list included: quarterback Deshone Kizer, linebackers Nyles Morgan and Greer Martini, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, offensive guard Quenton Nelson, safety Drue Tranquill and wide receiver Austin Webster.
This comes at a very surprising time considering the captains are usually announced much closer to the start of the season. Kelly stated he wants to set a tone for the off-season, and he believes this will help with the leadership of the football team heading into Spring practice.
While McGlinchey and Morgan are expected back for their senior seasons, there has been no indication from either Nelson or Kizer if they will enter the 2017 NFL Draft. As it stands, this will be the largest captain class in the program’s history and will also include the university’s very first active walk-on in Austin Webster.
