Connor McDavid out one to weeks with an upper body injury

The Edmonton Oilers will be without Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario, the game’s most dynamic player, for the foreseeable future. The injury happened on Saturday night in an Oilers’s 3-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

How did the injury happen?

There is no definitive answer at this time how the injury happened. McDavid was seen holding his side and in great discomfort late in the third period. As a result, he did not play the last four minutes of regulation, or the overtime session, which Jets forward Mark Scheifele of Kitchener, Ontario scored the game-winning goal. McDavid did collide with teammate Evander Kane of Vancouver, British Columbia in a 4-1 Oilers loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, and with Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey of Calgary, Alberta in the first period on Saturday.

In five games this season, McDavid has two goals and six assists for eight points. He is a -3 with six penalty minutes, five power-play points, 13 shots on goal, 28 faceoff wins, 10 hits, seven takeaways, and seven giveaways. Last year, McDavid led the NHL in goals (64), assists (89), and points (153).

Could McDavid miss the NHL Heritage Classic?

The Oilers are slated to play the Calgary Flames at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Sunday. At this time McDavid is slated to miss one to two weeks. That would mean McDavid will definitely not play Tuesday for Edmonton against Minnesota or Thursday against the New York Rangers. After that, it is anyone’s guess.

Two more players hurt

There are two more players that will be out for a while. They are Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Marc Staal of Thunder Bay, Ontario and Seattle Kraken right winger Andre Burakovsky. Staal had an upper body injury against the Oilers on Thursday and is projected to be four to six weeks. Burakovsky had an upper body injury against the Rangers on Saturday, and is projected to be out six to eight weeks.
