Can Borussia Dortmund really win this season’s Bundesliga?

It’s certainly been a topsy turvy world in European football this season. Not only have footballing titans like Real Madrid and Manchester United been struck by a particularly dismal run of form, but things are also a little different from normal in the Bundesliga.

This is because Borussia Dortmund are currently sailing away at the top of the German football league table, whilst the reigning champions, Bayern Munich are languishing back in fifth position. This is a remarkable turn of fortunes for Bayern Munich who have won the Bundesliga title the previous six seasons, and so it gives Borussia Dortmund a golden opportunity to become league champions.

Not that Borussia Dortmund are a bad side, but even their loyal army of black and yellow fans will have been surprised about how well things are going. The team are unbeaten after twelve games, and with nine wins and a goal difference of 22, it’s clear that the appointment of Lucien Favre to be Borussia Dortmund’s head coach in May 2018 was a very shrewd move.

Favre is renowned for his tactical knowhow having worked wonders with Borussia Monchengladbach and Nice, and he has managed to turn around the Borussia Dortmund team who had a fairly lacklustre 2017/18 season having only finished fourth in the league table.

But thanks to a hugely promising team packed with star players like Marco Reus, Paco Alcacer, Christian Pulisic and Axel Witsel, the team have managed to defy the critics and are looking odds-on to win the Bundesliga this season. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a team who were devastated by the explosions that rocked their team bus on their way to a Champions League match against Monaco. But it looks like Borussia Dortmund have a team spirit that could take them all of the way to the top.

“We asked the top German sports betting resource, www.sportwetten.org, what they thought about the chances of Borussia Dortmund winning the title, and they told us that most bookies have Lucien Favre’s team as favourites to become Bundesliga champions, although they could face strong challenges from Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig.”

Whilst Bayern Munich have certainly had a rough start to their campaign, with top players like James Rodriguez, Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben within their ranks, you should never discount these footballing titans. Their new head coach, Niko Kovac, has come in for plenty of criticism thanks to results like their 3-2 away loss to Borussia Dortmund. But with strong recent results such as their 5-1 thrashing of Benfica in the Champions League, it looks like a Bayern Munich revival could be underway.

Many would have predicted that Borussia Monchengladbach would fall to pieces after Lucien Favre left their ranks, but thanks to the expertise of their manager, Dieter Hecking, the team are just behind Borussia Dortmund in the table. And with RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt also in the running, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating season.
