We’re Gonna Cause Talk And Suspicion, Give An Exhibition

Find out what it is all about, indeed.  If you find yourself in need of this latest archival gem, hit me up.  With two preseason games down, the Chargers have already lost three guys for the season.  Somehow, I’d like to blame Mike McCoy for that.  Obviously, James Jones will probably fill Stevie Johnson’s role pretty well.  It’s not as if Johnson was even healthy for last season.  Jeff Cumberland suffered his second Achilles’ tear, which sucks for him.  Hunter Henry appears to be as advertised, but the Bolts’ depth (or lack thereof) is a running joke.  With their injury history, there is no question that the bench guys are going to be playing.  Last Saturday’s game proved that we aren’t very good when that happens.

This will be the first year that I don’t plan to watch the preseason in its entirety.  I kept up with the action on Twitter and saw all the big plays via video clips.  Both games were shown on NFL Network at ungoldly hours after the fact, but I did record them.  But at age 45, I finally think that it’s a waste of time to watch 32 quarters of preseason.  I don’t think you mind, FAITHFUL READER.  Even though the secondary played well last night, it made me sick to see that Mike McCoy kicked a field goal on the 2-yard line.  I really hate that guy.  As bad as the Chargers were last year, he could have won three or four games simply by not being such a pussy.  Of course, last season I openly hoped that the Bolts wouldn’t have a mediocre record at season’s end.  I thought that Dean and John Spanos would use the record and the injuries as an excuse not to overhaul things.

Then we went 4-12, kept McCoy AND GAVE HIM ANOTHER YEAR.  Don’t worry about firing Tom Telesco since he already had a secret extension before the season even began.  Now the one thing we did get out of that awful year, the third pick in the draft, still hasn’t signed.  With both spots ahead of us traded into by qb-needy teams, the Chargers essentially had the first pick in the draft.  Not everyone agreed that Bosa was the right call, but the Bolts claimed that they wanted him all along.  Bosa himself seemed shocked by this revelation.

So now he’s sat out because of signing bonus deferment and offset language issues?  I admit that I didn’t know a ton about either issue before this started and I wish I didn’t know as much as I do right now.  I can’t understand why the Chargers think that precedent works here.  The way they’ve done business has never netted a championship so they can’t act like they have results on their side.  I hate the idea of “The Bosa Family,” and was half-joking when I made the reference to the Mannings.  Of course, I had no idea that Bosa’s  mom would make that comment on Facebook.  Whether they have a point or not, I’m happy that some fan saw the post and spread it.  People should know better.  I don’t need to remind you about my phone call to Eli the night before the draft in 2004.  When I told him that karma was a bitch, I had no idea how wrong I’d be proved.  Sure, you could say that David Tyree, Wes Welker, and Mario Manningham made the difference in Eli’s post season record.  Besides those two seasons, he hasn’t won a single playoff game.  But it doesn’t matter.  The Chargers have never lost to him and never beaten Mark Sanchez.  That’s one to grow on.

I was psyched to see Melvin Gordon finish his touchdown run strong and break off a few last night.  Of course, McCoy is too weak to use him on the goal line still.  I know Wisenhunt is back, but I can never forget that Sunday in Washington in 2013.  But by the time we talk again, maybe Bosa will be signed and ready to suit up against the Vikings.  At least he hasn’t gotten hurt, right?  I’m off to Martha’s Vineyard tomorrow for the week to see my parents.  My dad is finished with his sixth round of chemo and has another scan in three weeks.  Thanks again to everyone’s good wishes.  I just finished a piece on Warren Zevon, which you can read here.  We’re going to be talking together a lot more very soon.  I hope you’re up to it.  I know you are.

JIC,
