Coutinho Football Journey

Liverpool v Chelsea - Premier League

Philippe Coutinho is a technically gifted football midfielder who is approaching his peak. Born on 12 June 1992, he is arguably one of the most talented players in the world. Many football legends have heaped praises on him, saying that he has the potential to get even better. The maestro has shown his class and skills at the highest level with several football teams.

Philippe Coutinho started his footballing journey in his home town with Vasco de Gama. In 2008, he turned 16 and decided to start a new stage of his career. He moved to Europe at Italian giants Inter Milan to begin a new phase. The club allowed him to make his Serie A and Champions League debut by the age of 18. After two and half seasons in Milan, Coutinho moved to Espanyol Barcelona. He managed to score five goals in 16 games while playing there for six months. This made him one of the team’s stars.

Coutinho moved to the Premier League in January 2013 after a successful spell at Espanyol. He opted to sign for Liverpool FC. Brendan Rodgers, then in charge at Liverpool, quickly spotted his potential. The Brazilian established himself as a key player. He scored his first goal for Liverpool on his official debut. It was a magnificent 5-0 victory over Swansea in February 2013.

Coutinho had no time for the nightclub antics. These are known to have destroyed the careers of so many of his peers. The latter was fully committed to Liverpool FC. Soon, he became an integral part of the club. Coutinho assumed the mantle of the team’s driving force once Liverpool’s star striker Luis Suarez was sold to Barcelona. With countless assists and 41 goals in 152 league appearances, he was valuable to the club.

The arrival of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool FC didn’t have any major impact on Coutinho’s future. He was equally important and seemed to have a bright future under Klopp. The midfield genius had the confidence of his new manager and was bound to carry the team. Due to the lack of trophies on the grandest stage, it was inevitable that he would hand in a transfer request sooner or later.

FC Barcelona came knocking the door and offered over £100 million to sign him in August 2017. Liverpool FC rejected Barca’s approaches and listed him as non-transferable. The transfer talk heated up again in January 2018 where Coutinho was keen to join the Catalan club. His arrival at FC Barcelona was confirmed on 8 January 2018 after five successful years in England. The midfielder signed for the remainder of the 2017/18 season, as well as five more. His buyout clause is currently set at 400 million euros.

Coutinho made his official debut with FC Barcelona on 25 January 2018. It was in the Copa del Rey quarter-final return leg against Espanyol. The Brazilian ace scored his first Barça goal in the Copa del Rey too, versus Valencia FC. Coutinho would finish the season with 10 masterclass goals. He is now focusing on the 2018/19 season with FC Barcelona. Winning the domestic league, Copa Del Rey and Champions league will be a grand step and achievement in his professional career.
